What about "photojournalism"?

Many people look at my samples, then ask me if I do the "photojournalistic style" of photography.  I always wonder, "can't you tell by looking at my work?"  If you have to ask the photographer, please be aware of how to interpret their answers.  Photographers define photojournalism very differently.

One photographer thinks that all he has to do is point the camera at people who aren't looking at him and, voila!, photojournalism.  Actually he is just taking snapshots, comparable to what your relatives with cameras might take.

Another photographer I know calls her "posed candids" photojournalism.  So she would say she is a photojournalist, even though I would disagree.  Posed candids can be beautiful, emotional and a lot of fun.  But they are not photojournalism.

Anyone recording an event using a camera, is technically a photojournalist.  A very good photojournalist will tell a story visually, in a way that is beautiful, intimate and emotionally moving.
